Dates shift on the lunar calendar and by township. Confirm with a local operator or guesthouse the year you travel — do not rely on this page alone for exact scheduling.
Major events travelers notice
Thingyan (Water Festival)
Mid-April (Burmese New Year)
Nationwide closures, heavy travel demand, playful street water fights in cities. Book transport early or avoid if you want quiet temples — many businesses shut for days.
Dry-season pagoda festivals
Nov–Feb (varies by township)
Local fairs around major stupas — crowds, music, and temporary stalls. Great atmosphere; accommodation near hot sites fills faster.
Shan State events
Often around full moons and lake towns
Boat races and hill-town gatherings near Inle and Taunggyi. Check local calendars; homestays may be full.
Full-moon (sabbath) days
Monthly lunar calendar
Some drink sales restricted; more locals visiting pagodas. Quieter evenings in some towns — respectful, not disruptive.
Planning with festivals in mind
- Want culture & energy? Align Bagan or Yangon with a pagoda festival window in dry season.
- Want easy buses and quiet sites? Avoid Thingyan week and peak New Year movement.
- Photography — ask permission at crowded fairs; processions are sensitive during religious events.
- Domestic flights — festival holidays sell out; book earlier than usual.
Season overlap
The popular travel window (Nov–Feb) already overlaps many local celebrations — good weather plus occasional crowds. Green season (Jun–Oct) has fewer tourists but more rain and some road constraints. See Planning basics on the homepage for climate framing.
