What permits mean in Myanmar

In Myanmar travel planning, a permit usually means government approval to enter a restricted or sensitive area — not a standard tourist visa. Many classic destinations (Bagan, Inle, Yangon) do not need this extra step for typical visits.

Restricted-area permits (often discussed as RAP or sector-specific travel permits) are commonly tied to:

• Approved dates and routes
• Licensed guides or tour operators
• Registered accommodation in permitted zones
• Printed copies carried during travel

Northern Kachin (e.g. Putao, Indawgyi, Bhamo corridors) and parts of Rakhine (Sittwe gateway toward Mrauk U) sit in or near security-sensitive zones. Access can pause, reroute, or require escorted transport even when flights still appear bookable.
