MyanmarTrails highlights permit areas so you do not accidentally build an itinerary through corridors that may be closed or require advance approval. Always confirm with your embassy, a registered local operator, and current official guidance before booking transport.
What is a “permit” here?
In Myanmar travel planning, a permit usually means government approval to enter a restricted or sensitive area — not a standard tourist visa. Many classic destinations (Bagan, Inle, Yangon) do not need this extra step for typical visits.
Restricted-area permits (often discussed as RAP or sector-specific travel permits) are commonly tied to:
- Approved dates and routes
- Licensed guides or tour operators
- Registered accommodation in permitted zones
- Printed copies carried during travel
Why some places need extra planning
Northern Kachin (e.g. Putao, Indawgyi, Bhamo corridors) and parts of Rakhine (Sittwe gateway toward Mrauk U) sit in or near security-sensitive zones. Access can pause, reroute, or require escorted transport even when flights still appear bookable.
MyanmarTrails marks these destinations with a shield icon and, where available, a destination-specific permit block on the place page with typical lead times and requirements.
How MyanmarTrails uses the permit flag
- Recommendations & cards — permit places show a shield badge so you can filter mentally before adding stops.
- Place pages — detailed notes when we have curated permit copy (Putao, Mrauk U, Sittwe, Indawgyi, Bhamo).
- Itinerary export — copied summaries include a permit reminder line for flagged stops.
- Saved compare — side-by-side table includes a permit row.
The flag means “plan for extra paperwork”, not “definitely impossible.” Conversely, absence of the flag does not guarantee an area is open — check advisories for every border region.
Typical planning steps
- Decide whether the destination is essential to your trip or a stretch goal.
- Contact a registered Myanmar tour operator with your nationality, dates, and route.
- Build buffer time (often 2–4 weeks lead time; sometimes longer).
- Keep flexible backup regions if a corridor closes.
- Carry printed permits and match your on-the-ground route to the approved plan.
